Why British Expats in Qatar Need a UK Side Tax Advisor

Living in Qatar does not end your relationship with HMRC. If you have UK rental income, a UK pension, savings interest, dividends, capital gains, or any continuing UK tie, you almost certainly still have a UK tax position to manage. Getting it wrong leads to interest, penalties, and in serious cases discovery assessments going back up to twenty years.

GMPA has a dedicated team serving British professionals in Qatar. That dual presence matters: most advisors handle either the UK side or the local side, but rarely both. We handle both, on one engagement, with one point of contact. Explore our full range of services here to see how we can support your position end to end.

Important Update: April 2025 Inheritance Tax Rule Change

From 6 April 2025 the UK fundamentally changed how Inheritance Tax exposure is determined. The old domicile based system has been replaced with a residency based system. Under the new rules, a person who has been UK tax resident for 10 of the last 20 tax years is treated as a “long term resident” and remains within the scope of UK IHT on their worldwide assets for up to 10 years after leaving the UK. Most British expats in Qatar do not realise this change applies to them, and many existing wills, trusts, and estate plans drafted under the old rules now need to be reviewed.

Our UK Tax Services for British Expats in Qatar

SRT

Statutory Residence Test

The SRT determines whether you are UK resident for tax purposes in any given tax year. We work through the automatic overseas tests, automatic UK tests, and the sufficient ties test using your day counts and ties to give you a clear, documented residence position.

SY

Split Year Treatment

If you moved to Qatar part way through a UK tax year, you may qualify for split year treatment under one of eight cases. We assess which case applies, calculate the split, and prepare your Self Assessment so only the UK part of the year is taxed in the UK.

RP

UK Rental Income

Renting out a UK property while living in Qatar means you must register under the Non Resident Landlord Scheme and continue to file a Self Assessment return each year. We prepare the return, claim allowable expenses, mortgage interest relief, and ensure the correct tax is paid.

DTT

UK Qatar Double Tax Treaty

The UK Qatar Double Tax Treaty protects you from being taxed twice on the same income. We apply the treaty correctly to pensions, employment income, dividends, interest, and royalties so you only pay what is genuinely due.

IHT

Inheritance Tax Planning

Following the April 2025 residency based reforms, IHT planning for British expats has changed completely. We review your worldwide estate, your “long term resident” status, and structure your affairs to legally minimise IHT exposure.

PEN

UK Pensions and Savings

QROPS, SIPPs, defined benefit transfers, ISAs, and UK savings interest all need careful review when you live in Qatar. We coordinate with your financial planner to make sure the tax outcome of every decision is properly considered.

How the Statutory Residence Test Works

The SRT is a three step test that HMRC uses to decide whether you are UK resident for a given tax year. Most British expats in Qatar fail to document their position properly, which is exactly the trigger HMRC needs to open an enquiry.

TestWhat It ChecksOutcome
Automatic Overseas TestsFewer than 16 days in the UK if you were resident in any of the prior 3 years, fewer than 46 days if not, or full time work overseas with limited UK days.Automatically non resident
Automatic UK Tests183 or more days in the UK, your only home is in the UK for at least 91 days, or full time work in the UK.Automatically UK resident
Sufficient Ties TestCombination of UK ties (family, accommodation, work, 90 day, country) compared against your UK day count.Resident or non resident depending on combination

We produce a written SRT assessment for every Qatar based client so you have a defensible record if HMRC ever asks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need to file a UK Self Assessment if I live in Qatar?
If you have UK rental income, UK self employment, untaxed UK savings or investment income, capital gains on UK assets, or HMRC has issued you a notice to file, then yes, you still need to submit a Self Assessment return each year. Living in Qatar does not remove this obligation.
How does the April 2025 IHT rule change affect me as a British expat in Qatar?
The UK has moved from a domicile based to a residency based IHT system. If you were UK resident for 10 of the last 20 tax years before leaving, you are treated as a “long term resident” and your worldwide estate remains within UK IHT scope for up to 10 years after departure. Most British expats in Qatar are unaware of this change and need their estate plans reviewed.
What is Split Year Treatment and do I qualify?
Split Year Treatment splits a single UK tax year into a UK part and an overseas part for tax purposes, so you are only taxed in the UK on the UK part. There are eight cases under which you may qualify, including starting full time work overseas (Case 1) and ceasing to have a UK home (Case 3). We assess which case applies to your move.
I rent out my UK home. What do I need to do from Qatar?
You need to register under the Non Resident Landlord Scheme so your letting agent or tenant can pay you gross. You must also file a UK Self Assessment each year declaring the rental income, claim allowable expenses, and pay tax on the net profit. We handle the entire process.
Will I be taxed twice on the same income under the UK Qatar Double Tax Treaty?
No, the UK Qatar Double Tax Treaty allocates taxing rights and provides relief so that the same income is not taxed twice. Different rules apply to employment income, pensions, dividends, interest, and rental income. We apply the treaty correctly to your specific circumstances.
How much does GMPA charge for UK tax services?
Every client situation is different, so we provide a clear fixed fee quote after the free 30 minute UK Tax Position Review. There are no hidden costs and no obligation to proceed.
Can GMPA handle both my UK and Qatar tax position?
Yes. We cover both your UK and Qatar position from Doha, which means you have a single team coordinating both sides of your position rather than two disconnected advisors.
